Samsung Galaxy S21 release date, specs, features: S Pen support addition could make the Galaxy Note series obsolete
Samsung’s popular “phablet” lineup might no longer be part of the company’s plans in 2021. Speculations about the cancellation of the Galaxy Note line heighten following reports that at least one of the upcoming Galaxy S21 models would support the S Pen.
Samsung Galaxy S21 could kill the Galaxy Note series for good
A report from a South Korean publication cited that “Samsung Electronics has confirmed” that an upcoming smartphone tentatively called the Galaxy S21 Ultra would work with the S Pen. The same feature is also reportedly planned for Samsung’s next foldable phone with the tentative name, Galaxy Z Fold 3.
Reports about the Galaxy Note series getting canceled have been circulating in the rumor mill for some months now, but this is the first to claim that it has been “confirmed.” The S Pen support is one of the main features that define how the Galaxy S and Galaxy Note series are different from one another. If it were to be added to a Galaxy S21 device, it makes sense for Samsung to no longer launch Galaxy Note 21 to avoid adverse effects on the sales of the latter. With that and considering the details in this report, it appears that the supposed Galaxy S21 Ultra could be the replacement for the next Galaxy Note device.
A device named Galaxy S21 UItra also appeared in an alleged leaked specs sheet from Android Police where the addition of S Pen support was also mentioned by their source. The upcoming smartphone is also expected to feature a 1-120Hz adaptive refresh rate on a 6.8” WQHD+ LTPO display along with the biggest battery in the lineup with 5,000mAh capacity. Unsurprisingly, all Galaxy S21 devices would be powered by either Qualcomm Snapdragon 875 or Exynos 2100, depending on the region where the smartphone is sold.
Samsung Galaxy S21 release date expected to happen early
The specs and features are not the only ones expected to change for the Galaxy S21 series. Samsung has been reportedly eyeing an earlier launch for the lineup that would make the smartphones available by February. Based on Samsung’s previous timelines between device announcement and retail launch, that makes the Galaxy S21 unveiling a likely event for January 2021.
