Facebook-based chatbot suspends service due to sexually offensive language
Facebook-based artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot Scatter Lab will temporarily suspend the service due to criticism over its use of sexually offensive language and discriminatory language against sexual minorities.
The company has also been suspected of abusing its users' personal information and not making enough efforts to protect it.
According to Scatter Lab, they would bring back the service after upgrading to eliminate hate speech and words of discrimination and fixing the weaknesses.
Scatter Lab apologized for the discriminatory remarks against minorities, which it said does not reflect the thoughts of the company, and for failing to "sufficiently communicate" guidelines on the use of personal information with its users.
The company vowed to clarify the procedures in using data to better deal with sensitive information and continuously improving algorithms.
Scatter Lab quickly gained popularity, attracting over 750,000 users since its launch in December.
The program could talk like a real person in a mobile messenger.
However, it has been subject to sexual conversations by some users.
